10 Popular Older Condos in Honolulu

New condos in Honolulu understandably get all the attention, at least for a time, but there’s a lot to love in those that have been around a little while.

I’ve assembled here 10 popular, older Honolulu condominiums that continue to be in-demand for the unique and even exceptional factors they give their residents.

You may be very surprised to find that these more mature properties have a lot to offer.

Waipuna

  • Address: 469 Ena Rd, Honolulu, HI 96815
  • Built:  1971, 407 1 – 4BR in 38-Story Building on 2.6 Acres
  • Amenities:  Pool, Sauna, Paddle Tennis Court, Putting Green, Fitness Room, Clubhouse, Library, Dog Run, BBQs

Waipuna Condo Building in Waikiki

The Waipuna has a lot of great amenities, unusual in space-restricted Waikiki, including a beautiful, calming pond feature, another rarity here, with beautiful green grounds surrounding it, all of which you take in from your large, covered lanai.

Your location eliminates the two complaints local residents always mention – noise and traffic. The building is set back from the always active Kalakaua Ave, with your parking garage on that side of the property further insulating you. Yet you’re close enough to the road to get in & out of Waikiki quickly instead of constantly contending with the congestion of this district.

If you’re wondering about beach time, the largest one in Waikiki, Fort DeRussy Beach, is only a ½ mile from here.

Diamond Head Vista

Diamond Head Vista Condo Building

The Diamond Head Vista has a privileged site for Waikiki, its immediate eastern neighbor being Jefferson Elementary School, with the Honolulu Zoo and Kapiolani Park beyond, giving you protected wide-open views that very few can claim of Diamond Head and the Pacific Ocean itself.

In addition, you sit at the corner of a curved one-way road that has only one entrance, off Wai Nani Way, and one way out, where it meets Ala Wai Blvd, ensuring little traffic through here and a quieter environment than almost anywhere in Waikiki.

The beach? Less than ⅓ mile to Kuhio Beach and the two popular lagoons there.

Regency At Kahala

Regency At Kahala Building

This is the only high-rise in Kahala on the ocean side of H-1, so you have the views to yourselves over this beautiful and storied neighborhood and even out to the ocean for many residents, which is less than a mile away.

The view is often wide-angle, since there are only four residences per floor, an arrangement that brings greater privacy and less outside noise.

Although the larger interiors make it easy to stay home, it’s also effortless to head over to the neighboring Kahala Mall, where you can shop, dine, catch a movie or get all your essentials at the drugstore and supermarket.

Yacht Harbor Towers

This building has the best of both the Ala Moana & Waikiki worlds, standing on the edge of Ala Moana, across the street from both the shopping & dining paradise of Ala Moana Center and the huge open space and golden beach of the Ala Moana Park.

Cross the bridge over the Ala Wai, right next to you, and you’re in Waikiki, with even more beaches, restaurants, stores and nightlife to enjoy.

The sights are stunning at home as well, since most condos look right out at the marina and the Pacific from your lanai, where you’ll especially want to be relaxing as the sun sets over the ocean.

Nauru Tower

Nauru Tower in Honolulu, HI

Standing right on Ala Moana Blvd,  the Nauru Tower was constructed with an innovative central core that not only withstands high wind damage & earthquakes, but also gives you maximum views since the usual outer reinforcement structure isn’t needed.

Those views include the ocean off of the huge park space and beach of Ala Moana Park, directly across the road, and neighboring Ala Moana Center, the largest collection of shopping and dining options in all of Hawaii.

While you are on the main artery of Ala Moana Blvd, your property is also placed uphill from it, with a large park-like recreation deck with shade trees and pavilions behind, making you feel like you’re far removed from your actual location.

Canterbury Place

Canterbury Place Condo Building in Waikiki

You can’t miss Canterbury Place as it rises right along Ala Moana Blvd, one of Waikiki’s main drags, with the open Ft Derussy park area across the street and less than ½ mile to the district’s largest beach.

You’re guaranteed not only a privileged perspective from here, but also a nice sized lanai of 107 to 553 Sq Ft to enjoy views of Diamond Head, Waikiki’s resort cityscape and, in some cases, out to the ocean.

The views are usually wider here due to the fact that there are only four units each on the 7th (the 1st residential level) to 31st floors and five units per floor on the 32nd to 41st.

Shopping & dining options surround you, even some in the bottom floors of your own building, and the biggest resource of all, Ala Moana Center is just a ½ mile west.

Royal Iolani

Royal Iolani Condo Buildings

One big reason I love the Royal Iolani is the small park environment that connects the two towers, creating a peaceful refuge within your property.

With Iolani School next door and park property on the other side of that, you have wide open views toward Waikiki and, where possible, some ocean views, all from lanais that are very roomy.

This is also an underrated location, with H-1 entrances up the street, access to Waikiki also close by and the very large Ala Wai Park just down your street with a range of recreation options.

One Waterfront Tower

One Waterfront Towers

Visitors to these residences are especially struck by their curved outer walls of floor-to-ceiling windows that give them angles of up to 180 degrees on their views that often take in the ocean and the historic Aloha Tower.

The lanais are made to be used regularly, most sized 155 to 233 Sq Ft, from where you can sit back and enjoy the view whenever the mood hits.

Being on the western end of Kakaako, it’s an easy commute, even without a car, to Downtown and the always growing attractions of your own neighborhood are even closer, including SALT, Mother Waldron Neighborhood Park and Restaurant Row.

1350 Ala Moana

  • Address: 1350 Ala Moana Blvd, Honolulu, HI 96814
  • Built: 1968, 353 2 & 3BR Units in 34-Story Building on 1.85 Acres
  • Amenities: Pool, Spa, Fitness Room, Clubhouse, Event Room, Recreation Area, BBQs

1350 Ala Moana Condo Building

1350 Ala Moana is the original high-rise on this strip, built to take full advantage of the perpetually sweeping views of Ala Moana Park and the Pacific Ocean, which you can wade into in minutes from your home across Ala Moana Blvd.

You also have your own large recreation deck that is more a private park, with green lawn spaces and trees, as well as its own outlook to the ocean.

One thing that has changed is that, along with Ala Moana Center one crosswalk away, you are now on the edge of the new Kakaako, giving you new shopping, dining and recreation choices almost every day as this innovative community takes shape.

Colony Surf

Colony Surf Building

Gold Coast condominiums are always in high-demand, but I’ve picked out the Colony Surf because, first of all, because of its neighbors up the coastline, the low-rise Outrigger & Elks Clubs.

This gives you not only a more open perspective that way, but you’re also not in close quarters with other towers like the cluster of Gold Coast high-rises up the way.

Colony Surf residents also uniquely have what is practically their own private beach due to the difficulty of reaching it from outside, making life here extra special, even for the Gold Coast.
