About Wailupe Beach Wailupe Beach is a luxury oceanfront neighborhood of about 2 dozen
beachfront homes along Kalanianaole Hwy plus about 120 homes within the Wailupe Peninsula. The Wailupe Beach neighborhood is bordered by Kai Nani to the west and Aina Haina Beach to the east.
Most Wailupe Beach homes for sale are priced between $1.2M to $5M with lot sizes between 6,000 to 30,000 sq ft. Coveted Wailupe Peninsula homes for sale are priced in the $1.3M to $8M range with typical lot sizes between 11,000 to 18,000 sq ft.
Insight to Wailupe Beach Homes & Neighborhood Simple fishing cabins and weekend homes made up Wailupe real estate as early as the 1920’s along the fishponds of Maunalua Bay, where fishing was excellent with calm shallow ocean waters and a protective outer reef. One of the larger fishponds in Maunalua Bay was filled in 1948 and the man made Wailupe Peninsula was developed as a new residential subdivision consisting of only three streets, Wailupe Circle along the perimeter, Akilolo and Niuhi St. A deep water channel was dredged around the peninsula and a new lava rock seawall built by the Army Corp of Engineers fortified the perimeter.
Today, Wailupe Peninsula, juts out proudly into the blue ocean, and is considered one of Honolulu’s finest oceanfront communities with homes located on generous lots along wide and quiet streets. Just over 30 of the Wailupe Peninsula homes are right on the ocean, and about 20 of these properties have boat docks. These are the creme de la creme choice properties for ocean lovers, offering a rare unique combination of fabulous views with the privacy of a protective seawall and a deepwater channel to moor your boat behind your backyard.

Wailupe Beach History Wailupe Beach neighborhood sits on the ocean side of Kalanianaole Hwy. Like a lot of places around Oahu, it was once the site of an ancient Hawaiian fishpond. Yet Wailupe fishpond was unique for 2 reasons. First, it was extremely large, taking up 41 acres in all. The entire present day neighborhood stands on what was once water.
Second is the fact that it survived longer than many other ancient fishponds on this side of Oahu. In fact, it's conceivable that it might be there even now if not for the 1946 tsunami. The impact of this event left the pond walls severely damaged and the surrounding area devastated. The large dairy farm based nearby was put out of business and the owner, whose holdings included the pond, sold his land to Walter Dillingham in 1947.
Dillingham owned Hawaiian Dredging and saw the possibilities for the area. His company dug out the channel that sits by the peninsula now, moving over the earth dug up to fill in the fishpond. At the time, Wailupe was one of only 3 ancient Hawaiian fishponds remaining on Oahu's eastern shores.
Wailupe Beach homes were soon added on top of the new grounds, creating a neighborhood right on the ocean. Some vestiges still exist that mark the old pond which once sat across from the current fire station. Everywhere else you'll find the modern homes of Wailupe Circle, sitting on prime real estate that didn't even exist less than a hundred years ago.
