Kailua is one of the few true beach towns remaining on Oahu. Located about a 20 minute drive from Honolulu over the Pali Highway, Kailua is loved for its small-town charm, laid back attitude, and beautiful beaches. Although it has a small town feel, it’s actually a fairly large place with a number of neighborhoods, three major shopping center areas, a number of public and private schools, and a hospital.
The Kailua Beachside homes is located in a neighborhood that is one of the most desirable and high-end sections of this town. Located on the northeast end of Kalaheo Avenue, which runs parallel to the beach, Kailua Beachside homes are located along a number of small roads off of Kalaheo Avenue that dead end at Kailua Beach. Many of the largest homes are beachfront with incredible views of Kailua Bay, the Mokulua Islands, and the sunrise. Homes that aren’t beachfront still have a fantastic location, just walking distance to Kailua Beach. Residents can enjoy walks on the beach at sunrise and sunset, have easy access to the beach on busy weekend days, and can head straight out with their surfboard, bodyboard, fins or kayak when they want to enjoy the water.
Even though Kalaheo Avenue is a busy main street, the side roads are quiet and peaceful. The closer you get to the ocean, the more traffic, work, and stress fade into the background. Kailua Beachside homes are on the quiet section of this popular beach. The beach parks along the road are further south toward Lanikai and the neighborhood is surrounded by more residential areas. Kalaheo Avenue has a sidewalk on the makai, or ocean, side of the road, and while it’s a popular route for runners, walkers and bicyclists, all traffic on this street generally passes right by Kailua Beachside homes.
Houses in this neighborhood are lovely and very well-maintained. Many channel beachside cottages in their design, although most are much larger than a cottage. Even though Kailua Beachside real estate is on the high end, homes here tend to be unassumingly nice and fit into the relaxed lifestyle that Kailua is known for. Sizes range from smaller one bedroom homes to very spacious estates with five bedrooms or more on expansive lots.
The more glamorous houses can be found at the very end of Kalaheo Avenue, off of Kailuana Road. Bordering a canal that leads to the ocean, this is a small sub-neighborhood made of a few roads leading to the beach. A portion of this area is gated and because homes are further off of Kalaheo Avenue, it is an incredibly peaceful place. The houses are generally larger and sleeker back here, but they are still open and fit the beach lifestyle of this town.
The Kailua Beachside neighborhood is an ideal location if you’re looking for a home that is right on the beach and in a higher-end area. Just a short drive from Kailua Town’s great restaurants, fashionable island-style boutiques, schools and parks, it’s also about as close as you can get to beautiful Kailua beach. It would be hard to go wrong choosing a home in this neighborhood.
