History of Kealakekua Bay
Kealakekua Bay, located about 12 miles south of Kailua-Kona, has a rich history spanning over a thousand years. It was a significant cultural and social hub for ancient Hawaiians. The bay's name, meaning "the path of the gods," reflects its deep spiritual importance, particularly as a site for the annual Makahiki festival honoring the fertility god Lono. Today Kealakekua Bay is known for its historical significance, kayaking, snorkeling and paddle surfing.
