This area of Maui is noteworthy because all the condominiums are oceanfront, with ocean views from almost every unit in them.
Built entirely from 1972 - 1980, these are some of the most affordable waterfront properties on the Island here. This is due mainly to the Leasehold tenure of many listings, though some have converted to Fee Simple in recent years.

History of Maalaea Like many Maui shoreline communities, Maalaea’s life has centered on its waters. This was a fishing village for hundreds of years in Ancient Hawaii. Its unobstructed, deeper waters also made it a perfect landing place for periodic invading armies from other Islands. In the mid-1800’s this became a thriving commercial harbor, much of its activity serving the Waikapu Sugar Company plantation, which was linked here by a railroad.
World War II brought changes as the US Army used much of this area for training exercises, followed by the plantation system decline soon afterward. Tourism soon revived the harbor, and much of the business that depended on it, as ocean recreation and commercial fishing boats quickly found demand. The new economic environment caused Maalaea to be opened for condominium construction in 1970, producing the 10 condos now on this shoreline in one decade.
Today, Maalaea is home to the
Maui Ocean Center, a world-class aquarium, and the headquarters of the
Pacific Whale Foundation.
