Pet Friendly (dogs & cats) & Not Pet Friendly Condos in Honolulu, Hawaii

This is the go to resource for pet friendly (dogs & cats) – and not pet friendly – condos in Honolulu, Hawaii, covering condos from Downtown Honolulu (west) to Hawaii Kai (east). Please verify any and all information with a given condo before making any decisions to purchase, sell or otherwise, as condo association house rules frequently change.

Definitions
(for the sake of this post)
Pet friendly means at least 1 dog or 1 cat is allowed.
Not pet friendly means other animals such as birds, fish, guinea pigs etc (except dogs and cats) may be allowed or no animals at all.
Pets allowed means dogs and cats are allowed and the House Rules do not specify any restrictions on the number of dogs and cats allowed or only specifies “a reasonable number.”
2 pets allowed means it is allowed to have 2 dogs or 2 cats or 1 dog + 1 cat.
1 dog and 1 cat allowed means only 1 of each kind is allowed.

Important (please read)
1) Restrictions on the weight, height, length and number of dogs and / or cats will be highlighted. Other possible restrictions will not be highlighted and they may include:
a) Pets must be carried or transported in common areas (on a leash isn’t always enough)
b) owner or tenant must carry a pet liability insurance policy,
c) owner or tenant must pay a pet deposit (sometimes non-refundable) and / or an annual registration fee,
d) pets must be neutered or spayed as appropriate,
e) owner or tenant must register pets at the manager’s office with a photo,
f) owner or tenant must obtain written board approval prior to pets living in the condo,
g) owner or tenant must complete a pet registration form, which on occasions need to be notarized, and then approved by the condo’s board, before such pet can live in the condo.
2) Some condos are more “pet loving” than others (if your pet does not fit perfectly within the requirements specified in the House Rules, it may be worthwhile inquiring to the association before ruling such condo out).
3) Confirm meaning of ambiguous language with the Property Manager, Resident Manager and / or Site Manager (“small pets allowed”, “a reasonable number of pets allowed”, “pets allowed subject to board approval” etc).
4) When a pet weight limit is in place, a condo will typically not allow an infant or juvenile pet, which, when fully grown, is likely to exceed that weight limit.
5) The restrictions on pets outlined in this post do not reflect the rights of people with service or emotional support animals. Here are a couple of resources, addressing the rights of people with service or emotional support animals: American’s with Disabilities Act and Hawaii Civil Rights Commission

Pet Policy Changes
If you find changes to a pet policy or if you know the pet policy of a condo in Honolulu (Downtown through Hawaii Kai) that we haven’t reviewed yet, we would very much appreciate if you will share in the comments section below or contact us here. We want to do our best to keep this resource current and up-to-date.

  1. I have three dogs which total are less than 45 lbs…. I need to find a place but its hard. Any suggestions?

  2. Kristian, did Kathleen or Bobbin get back to you with those adds they mentioned? I’m curious too.
